Emergency Preparedness Checklist
1. Create an Emergency Plan
- Meet with your family. Discuss what could happen in the case of fire, severe weather, earthquake, flood, forest fire or other disaster.
- Plan a response to each type of disaster.
- Establish two escape routes from each room.
- Post emergency telephone numbers. Make sure all family members know how and when to call.
- Pick one local and one out-of-state friend or relative to call if you become separated during a disaster.
- Pick two meeting places -- one close by and one outside your neighborhood.
2. Prepare a Disaster Supplies Kit
(Items should be checked and updated every six months.)
- 3 days' supply of water
- Supply of non-perishable food
- Change of clothing
- Rain gear, sturdy shoes
- Blankets/sleeping bags
- First aid kit/prescription medications
- Extra pair of glasses
- Battery powered radio
- Flashlight & extra batteries
- Credit cards/cash
- Extra set of keys
- List of family physicians
- Important family information
3. Prepare an Emergency Car Kit
- Battery powered radio
- Flashlight & extra batteries
- Blanket
- Booster cables
- Fire extinguisher (type ABC)
- First aid kit & manual
- Bottled water
- Non-perishable food (i.e., granola bars)
- Maps
- Shovel
- Tire repair kit & pump
- Flares
- Tire chains
